Sargent Robert Shriver, father to Maria Shriver and an immense patriot, has passed away. He succumbed to his long battle against Alzheimer's disease at the age of 95.
His family said in a statement that Shriver, known as Sarge, was surrounded by his five children and 19 grandchildren when he died in a Washington-area hospital.
Almost every American now has someone from their family or close circle of friends who served in the Peace Corps, and most of us who served have rich memories and stories to share.In 1976 I became the Deputy Campaign Manager for Sargent Shriver's bid for U.S. President.Sargent Shriver did several immense services this to country, including launching the U.S. Peace Corps after marrying into the Kennedy family as well as heading the Special Olympics.
After a long life of 95 years, Sargent Shiver died today and he will always live forever in our memory as the young, vibrant brother in law of John F Kennedy and the husband of Eunice Kennedy Shriver, he set the example of selfless public service to this generation and those who followed.
