Massive Japan Tsunami : Magnitude-5.4 quake jolts central Japan The First 24 Hours

A magnitude-5.4 earthquake has rattled central Japan and at least seven people are hurt.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit Thursday in Nagano, some 170 kilometers (105 miles) northwest of Tokyo. The quake was just four kilometers (2.5 miles) deep. No tsunami warning was issued, the agency said.

Nagano fire department official Sadahiko Furusawa said seven people were injured in the quake, but none was in critical condition.

Japan is located on the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines spanning the Pacific Basin, and is regularly hit by earthquakes. The nation is recovering from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami on March 11, which left more than 22,000 people dead or missing in northeastern Japan.

As the camera pans down again, two people on the opposite side of the road can also been seen watching events unfold above them.

Then one larger, bright and more slow moving disc-shaped white object appears, circles around briefly and zips off.

A plane crash in the Russian region of Karelia has killed at least 44 passengers. Poor weather is believed to have been a factor as the crew attempted an emergency landing.The pilots of the RusAir flight from Moscow were believed to have attempted an emergency landing on a highway about two kilometers (1.2 miles) from the plane's destination, Petrozavodsk airport in the Karelia region.

The Tupolev Tu-134 broke into pieces and erupted in flames as it made contact with the ground, the Karelia branch of Russia's Emergencies Ministry said in a statement on its website.

The statement said the plane had sustained a "hard landing" and that contact with the pilot had been lost at 11:40 p.m. local time. Heavy fog is believed to have been a contributing factor. A total of 43 passengers and a crew of nine had been traveling on the plane. Eight survivors taken to hospital.

Local news agency Interfax has reported the airport's director as saying there had been 'unfavourable weather conditions' in the area at the time, including thick fog and heavy rain.Crash investigators have recovered the flight recorders from the scene and have begun a wide-ranging probe into the incident, which has caused concern throughout Russia's aviation industry.

Wang added that the parents of the said twins are farmers, did not want to have the babies at first, fearing they could not afford to keep them alive.



Wang also said that they've transferred the twins to a hospital in the nearby metropolis of Chongqing to be examined by experts.The local Huaxi Metropolis Daily reported the twins weighed 9 pounds (4 kilograms) and measured 20 inches (51 centimeters).

They have two spines and two esophaguses and share other organs. Doctors were quoted as saying it would be nearly impossible to separate them.

The earthquake struck a relatively rural section of the country that borders on Thailand, Laos, and China. Mynamar is also known as Burma, though the country's official name is the Union of Mynamar.The earthquakes, which occurred at a shallow magnitude of just six miles, pose little to no risk of creating a tsunami because they were located so far inland.

According to latest reports, the toll could rise and it would be a while before the scope of damage is known.This is the second biggest quake after the devastating Japan quake that killed nearly 30,000 people and caused damages worth trillions apart from radiation threats.

The quake, with a shallow epicenter 6.2 miles deep, hit about 8:30 p.m. Thursday night in a mountainous area along Myanmar's borders with Thailand and Laos, the report said, quoting Myanmar's Meteorology and Hydrology Department.The 6.8-magnitude quake was just six miles (10 kilometers) deep, according to the US Geological Survey.

The quake was followed by a 5.4-magnitude aftershock hours later. It brought down buildings or structures and set off landslides.

A bomb exploded at a crowded bus stop Wednesday in central Jerusalem, killing one woman and wounding 38 in what appeared to be the first militant attack in the city in several years.The blast could be heard throughout Jerusalem and blew out the windows of two crowded buses.



No one claimed responsibility for the bombing, which coincided with an upsurge of violence on the Gaza border that has led to fears of a new war between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, which governs the Gaza Strip. Israeli police blamed Palestinian militants, calling the blast a "terrorist" attack.

Israel's public security minister, Yitzhak Aharonovich, told Channel 2 TV that the bomb was about four pounds (one to two kilograms) and was planted in a small bag on the sidewalk. He said security services were on alert for additional attacks.



The 3 p.m. attack occurred near the main entrance to Jerusalem, next to the city's central bus station, an area that is crowded with travelers and passers-by at all hours of the day.The blast reverberated throughout Jerusalem and blew out the windows of two crowded buses. Rescuers removed bloodied people from the area on stretchers, as sirens from speeding ambulances wailed in the background.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat said the city would rebound quickly, vowing that Jerusalem's first-ever marathon would take place as planned on Friday."Every once in a while we are reminded who we are dealing with, a bunch of cowardly terrorists that put bombs in the middle of pedestrians," he said.

"They will very soon find out that the city goes back to normal life and this is the best way to deal with terror – to show them that they have no gain from hurting innocent people."

For the second time in five months, New Zealand's south island city of Christchurch was rocked by a major earthquake on Tuesday afternoon local time.Initial reports from Reuters news agency indicated that there were no reports of casualties, from the magnitude 6.3 temblor.

But the New Zealand Herald is reporting casualties and major damage to downtown buildings, including the Christchurch Cathedral.

In it's live blog, the Herald reports phone lines down, water running through the streets, and several buildings with serious damage.The quake destroyed the spire of the iconic stone Christchurch Cathedral, which toppled into a central city square, and police said there was a report of two buses crushed under falling buildings.It shook the Canterbury region, which has a population of approximately 500,000. Radio New Zealand reports "that some people have been killed."

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker declared a state of emergency and ordered people to evacuate the city center. The airport was closed, and Christchurch Hospital was briefly evacuated before it was deemed safe and patients were returned. Power and telephone lines were knocked out, and pipes burst, flooding the streets with water. Some cars parked on the street were buried under rubble.

Christchurch resident Jane Smith who works in the central city told the Herald a work colleague had just returned from helping rescue efforts after a building facade had collapsed on a bus on Colombo St.

"There's people dead. He was pulling them out of a bus."

MOSCOW - Russia's Emergencies Ministry says eight foreign citizens, including two Britons, are among the 35 people killed in a suicide bombing at Moscow's busiest airport.A explosion ripped through the arrivals hall at Moscow's busiest airport on Monday, killing 31 people and wounding about 130, Health Ministry officials said.

Russian news agency Interfax reported on its website that the explosion took place near the luggage check-in section.

The cause of the blast had not yet been determined; however, both Reuters and Agence France-Presse news agencies were reporting it was the result of a suicide bombing.The death toll later rose to 35 as one person died while being hospitalized and three succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
