The Volga River, situated 750 kilometers east of the Russian capital of Moscow saw to a boat sinking on Sunday at around 2:00 P.M. The cause of the boat, called the Bulgaria, sinking remains unclear at this time. The Bulgaria was commissioned and built in 1956. According to Associated Press interviews, the Bulgaria lacked modern safety features.
According to the Itar-Tass news, the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Tatarstan spokesperson Irina Andiranova stated that an estimated 99 to 111 people are still missing after a double-deck passenger boat sank in the Volga River. The boat was carrying over 180 passengers including the staff.
There has been one confirmed death of a female as a result of drowning.
Earlier, emergency officials estimated around 10 to 20 people missing. After several scurries, the Emergency Ministry now puts the estimate at around 100.
The Bulgaria was on its way to the Tatarstan capital of Kazan from the town of Bulgar until it sunk near Sukeyevo, a village eighty kilometers to the south of Kazan, the destination.
Rescue operations are still underway after dozens have been rescued and will continue into the evening.
The Russian government has already commenced an investigation into the Bulgaria incident to find possible criminal intentions behind the sinking.
